Veterans on Medicaid - “not just the very poor”
Email from Ohio: This is from the daughter of a World War II veteran who saved a lot for retirement, but still needed Medicaid:
I just heard you on MSNBC today discussing Ryan budget. One further point you need to include about Medicaid that is being overlooked in the discussion. Increasingly, Medicaid is being used by middle class Americans for their long term stays in nursing homes.
My Dad, a WW II vet who never made more than $30,000/ year, managed to save a hefty nest egg of $500,000, an amount I never would have believed until I had to take over his finances when he had to enter a nursing home with Alzheimer’s. He went through that in 5 years and had to go on Medicaid for 3 years before he died. That is something that should be scaring all of us, not just the very poor.
